The Band Scale Explained
NAPLAN uses a national scale from Band 1 (lowest) to Band 10 (highest). Each year level has a national minimum standard: Band 2 for Year 3, Band 4 for Year 5, and Band 5 for Year 7.
What Each Result Level Means
- Below national minimum: The school should be providing targeted support — discuss with the teacher.
- At national minimum: Meeting basic requirements. Room to grow.
- Above national minimum: Performing as expected or above.
- Top two bands: Excellent — consider extension activities to maintain challenge.
The most important part of the NAPLAN report is not the band — it's the diagnostic information about specific skill areas. Use this to direct preparation for the following year.
Growth Matters More Than a Single Score
A child who scores Band 5 in Year 3 and Band 7 in Year 5 has shown excellent growth. Track progress across years rather than fixating on a single result in isolation.
